Sensus - The Landscape of Stolen Moments

“Sensus” (Latin) – perception, opinion, thought, sense, view, meaning.

This is an exhibition of works that explore sensuality: not only in the physical sculpted form, but also the interpretation of that physical world through the human senses. Our interpretation of the world is a combination of physical experience and a more intangible/spiritual/mental ‘experience’. The latter is influenced by a combination of memories, previous experiences, and social norms, amongst others. Memories can be triggered by a smell, sound, taste, image or texture, by a sensory (more physical) experience. The physical and spiritual experiences are interdependent and create that sensuality. A familiar smell/taste can recreate a clear mental image of one specific moment in our past. The landscape and the body are often the backdrop to these split second cameos of memory.

The sculptures are inspired by the plants and landscapes of the Karoo, and the human form. The lines of similarity between these subjects are explored to the point of abstraction where the sculptures no longer refer to a particular plant, place or person but rather focus on the inherent sensuality common to all of them. Soft curves, hollows, mounds, and bulges contrast with clean edges and crisp lines; the tree rings within the wood medium, become contours outlining hills and valleys or protrusions and depressions - the landscape of human experience and memory.
