Restone Maambo

The Scenes Behind

Restone Maambo was born on the 21st February 1980 in Lusaka, Zambia. As a small child he was drawn to and inspired by the art of comics and cartoons. At the age of 5, before he even knew how to write a letter “A”, he could already draw a portrait. He always used charcoal or pencil to make his drawings, but when he saw “colour” for the first time, he knew that that was what he had been waiting for all his life.

In spite of being discouraged by the people around him, his passion for art remained undiminished. Eventually, as a self-taught artist he came to Cape Town and faced difficult challenges in his working environment. This did not deter him. He applied for and received a scholarship from the Ruth Prowse Art School in 2007. He received an award as the most successful student in Fine Art I and was awarded another scholarship for 2008.

The visual language on his canvas is directly influenced by what surrounds him and what he currently experiences in his community. Subjects such as HIV, public transport and the lifestyle of surviving (vending) form part of his art journey in this exhibition titled, “The Scenes Behind”.
