Ilse Nieman
The Human Presence
Ilse Nieman’s small series of oil paintings emphasises the concept of coincidence – the imprint we leave behind in a careless moment and the beauty and mystery in the ordinary things we surround ourselves with. She attempts to create an experience of ‘the human presence’ despite its obvious absence – almost creating a voyeuristic discomfort for the viewer, even though the subject matter may seem mundane or predictable at first glance. The ambiguous iconography hints at a narrative, but it merely triggers the viewer’s imagination in order to arrive at his/her own conclusion.
