Padlangs - deur Marguerite Barkhuysen

Padlangs, translated along the road, is a reference to the route leading from the Jaffa Gate to the Western Wall, along the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. All the photographs and reference material for the exhibition, was taken by the artist in 2006 and 2007, during her visit to Israel.

This upcoming exhibition is the first for this young artist, Marguerite Barkhuysen. After finishing her studies in Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch in 2005, she made her home between Cape Town and Israel. During her stay in Jerusalem, where she was doing volunteer work, her love for the country and its people soon flourished. Barkhuysen describes the experience as looking into the history of the Bible, and becoming part of the story. For the artist, the streets of the Old City do not only testify to the history of a nation, but also tells the story of every person that makes its way through it. This journey does not only point to what lies behind us, but creates an expectation of what is to come.

This exhibition is a journey with the artist on the road through the Old City towards the Temple Mount. Through wandering streets and around quiet corners, no space is ever without human existence. The focus here is definitely on the story and personality of the human characters, rather than the depiction of factual space
